About Dr. Martin Lanoff
One of my favorite sayings is, “One must know what exactly is wrong with the patient to be able to treat them.” Obtaining a thorough history and performing a thorough physical examination is imperative in doing so. I have taught musculoskeletal physical examination at the medical school level for over 15 years. Another of my favorite sayings is, “A doctor should listen to the patient to find out what is wrong with them.” My practice philosophy is to fully evaluate my patients, explain their diagnosis to them, then work with them toward a common goal of recovery. A true partnership.
My Practice Philosophy
A specialist in physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R physician) is also called a physiatrist. My specialization is in sports medicine, outpatient musculoskeletal medicine and pain medicine. My specific focus is on decreasing my patients’ symptoms while allowing them to maximize their function and return to a full and rewarding life without surgery. I do not want to simply manage my patients’ pain; our mutual goal should be to make every attempt possible to alleviate their pain from a conservative care or non-operative perspective and do so as naturally as possible. Limiting the use of medications that mask a patient’s pain and providing efficient and accurate care is our mutual goal. While I understand that surgery is often unavoidable, I strive to maximize conservative care up to that point. Allowing a patient to be active in their care and to be able to spend their time away from physicians and other healthcare treaters is always a priority in our treatment partnership.
